What will your coaching & mentoring visit look like?
Your facilitator will customise support according to the needs of your service, throughout the day. This may include the following:
Spend 1:1 time with staff
Coaching and mentoring involves 1:1 or small group conversations with the whichever staff you nominate.Learning environment visits
Observe environment, program, and curriculum decisions and discuss concerns with key staff in the learning environment.QIP recommendations
You can request written or verbal QIP recommendations. If you would like this option, you will need to allocate 30 minutes per QIP recommendation (to be delivered either written or verbally) on the day.Tailored advice
Advice will be provided in a way that is strength based and solution focused, with an aim to increase the services capacity to reach the goals of their project. This is your day - your way
We're here to support you. Not assess or judge you. Feel free to let us know what you need to feel supported. Each coaching & mentoring visit we do looks different to the last. We'll be guided by how you'd like to structure the day. However, the ideas below might help you get a clearer vision for the day. Please share this page with all staff who will be part of the coaching and mentoring on the day. Your facilitator may request confirmation that all staff members involved have been given this information.
Plan the day / set the scene
You've got the undivided attention of an experienced education & care coach for the day, some planning will ensure you make the most of it. Feel free to provide your facilitator with a timetable / schedule of which room to visit and with whom to meet.
We strongly recommend planning for an additional staff member to be available on the day to maximise the time that the facilitator is visiting the learning environments. When your facilitator arrives, this additional educator can 'shadow' the facilitator for the day, to help with supervision during the coaching and mentoring sessions. This allows for the lead educator or other staff to have focused conversations with facilitator. If this is not possible, please notify your facilitator on the day and discuss a plan to ensure supervision is not compromised during coaching and mentoring conversations.
Be prepared with questions
Before the day, know a bit about your service's goals for the project. What are you as a team hoping to achieve? Have a read of some of our resources, web page, or content if you're not sure what we do.
Write down your answer to these questions and have them at the ready when we arrive:
How could today be most useful to you?
What are your biggest challenges in your work?
Where are your strengths?
What are you curious about?
Take notes
Create a time and space where you can have a conversation with your facilitator, without compromising supervision of children. This may mean being covered while you are on the floor, or spending some of the time out of the room to have uninterrupted conversation.
Have a pen and paper at the ready. You might also find it useful to have large pieces of paper and coloured pens to write on during your 1:1 coaching and brainstorming sessions.
Be ready to take notes from your conversation.
Feel free to ask your facilitator where you can find further information, resources and readings.
