Getting the most from
The Phoenix Cups® Quiz

A few things worth knowing before you dive in, so that your results are as accurate (and as useful) as possible.

What the Quiz is Actually Measuring

The quiz isn't measuring how you feel today. It's measuring something much more stable than that: your needs strength profile, the unique size of each of your five Cups.

And because your profile is thought to be relatively stable across your lifetime (Phoenix & Phoenix, 2019), you'll get a far more accurate result if you answer with your whole life in mind, not just this moment.

Here's why that matters. Imagine you're asked: "When you go to a trivia night, are you there to play and enjoy the social experience, or are you there to win?" If your Fun Cup® happens to be running low right now, you might answer "to play", because connection and fun feel more appealing than competition in this moment.

But if your Mastery Cup® is actually larger than your Fun Cup®, the honest truth is that 8 times out of 10, across your life, you've been the one keeping score and secretly (or not so secretly) hoping your team comes first. Today might be the anomaly, not the pattern.

Answer on average, across decades, not across days.

The Golden Rule of the Phoenix Cups® Quiz

Ask yourself: "How would I have answered this three years ago? Ten years ago? Last year?"

When your responses across time start to align, you're likely landing close to your true profile.

Three Tips for a Great Result

Tip 1: Invite a witness

If you can, sit with someone who knows you well, not just in one context, but across many. A friend who has seen you at work and at play, in stress and in ease, in groups and one-on-one.

Ask them to read along as you answer and gently check in with you: "Is that really most like you, or is that how you're feeling lately?"

You're always the one who decides, but having someone reflect your patterns back to you can surface things you might not notice about yourself.

Tip 2: Answer your real self, not your ideal self

Sometimes we answer the quiz as the person we'd like to be, rather than the person we actually are. There's no judgement here, it's a very human thing to do.

But if you want your profile to be genuinely useful, you need to answer honestly.

"What is most like me, most of the time, across many different contexts?" is always a better question than "What would I like to be true about me?"

Tip 3: Check in with yourself across time

As you work through each question, pause and run it through this quick mental check:

  1. Three years ago, how would I have answered this then?
  2. Ten years ago, same question. Same answer?
  3. Last year, still consistent? If yes, you've found your pattern.
