Summer Says:

Chicken expert, Summer Farrelly, is featured throughout the book in Summer Says info boxes. When Summer was 9 years old, she wanted to share how her chicken flock helped her understand social cues and situations. Being on the autism spectrum, she at times found social settings both challenging and confusing. Her chicken flock gave her a place to belong, help her build resilience, and accept who she is. Over the past few years she has achieved this and so much more.

Whilst living in the Aboriginal community of Roebourne, Gabby also taught in the Correctional Centre. Gabby formed intimate and influential relationships with the Ngarluma & Yindjibandi women during her time in Roebourne. It is here, in the driest, hottest part of Australia, Gabby learnt about chickens, edible gardens and sustainability from one of her listeners who was living off the grid-a wild human.
